Worship Pastor Position

I am proud to announce that my family and I have recently accepted a position as Worship Pastor of Lakeshore Church in Byram, Mississippi(Just South of Jackson). Although Aaron Odom Ministries will still continue, my concert schedule will reduce to about 8-12 concerts a year. So how did this all come about? This past November I had the opportunity to sing a concert at Lakeshore and began to establish a great relationship with the Pastor David Watson. After meeting with several times my wife and I both felt an incredible connection, and a great level of respect for him and his ministry. He is a man who truly loves God and people. One of the biggest attractions to this pastor was his heart for the unchurched. Another is that he has a healthy understanding of the calling God has on my life for traveling concert ministry. Up until now we have been offered many positions on staff at churches throughout the country, but we clearly see that God is working in and through both this new position at Lakeshore and through Aaron Odom Ministries. This is something that we have prayed for over the past three years and finally, in God's perfect timing he has made a way. Thank you for your continued prayers for us and our ministry. We love you all!

Building Missional Communities

Form Charts

What is a form chart?  It's something that I have been creating for several months now that is in between a typical chord chart and a Nashville Number System chord chart.  Created for ear musicians it gives a clear blueprint on the form of the song, chord progressions, and my favorite, the voicings or instrumentation.  This way, you can have the ebb and flow of dynamics and not just ..."Everybody play from the beginning to the end."  Here are a few examples.

Pleasing to God

Last night, PJ and I were working in the kitchen and Ramsey was playing nearby.  I had a Hymnal out on the kitchen counter and I said, "Ramsey, go put the book on the piano."   He took the book into the living room and he just so happened to have been playing earlier with a little toy piano (about 1 foot long).  I heard PJ laughing and she said, "Look, Honey!"  Ramsey had balanced that Hymnal right on top of his little keyboard.  Well, maybe he didn't get it exactly where I wanted it, but he was obedient and I was so proud of him!  It made me feel great that he listened to my voice and responded to my instructions.   I know that he has a desire to have purpose and it's my job to direct him and lead him.  I also know that he will benefit and be healthy from obeying his mommy and daddy. 

It makes me wonder how much it pleases God when we listen to him and obey his voice.  I think it makes him proud of us when we follow his lead.  He knows what decisions are best for us.  He has a plan that is so fruitful and satisfying.  We just need to yield to his direction and correction and we will undoubtedly fulfill our purpose in life.  Thank you God for being my daddy. -Aaron

"Sophisticated"

Check this definition of sophisticated.  My favorite is the third one.

• adjective:   intellectually appealing   Example: "A sophisticated drama"
• adjective:   having or appealing to those having worldly knowledge and refinement and savoir faire    Example: "Sophisticated young socialites"
• adjective:   marked by wide-ranging knowledge and appreciation of many parts of the world arising from urban life and wide travel   
• Example: "The sophisticated manners of a true cosmopolite"
• adjective:   ahead in development; complex or intricate
• Example: "A sophisticated electronic control system"

Why is this significant?

1 Corinthians 9:19-23 says:
For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the Gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

I think that when Paul said we need to be all things to all people, he was saying that we need to be sophisticated. "Aaron, I think you are using the term incorrectly". 

Maybe so, but I don't think so.  Sophisticated doesn’t necessarily mean you have a scarf around your neck with a cat on your lap, sipping Earl Grey.  Rather, to be well-rounded, openminded, well-versed in culture, enough that we can identify with people of every kind.  I think if Paul were here today, he would say to the hunters, I hunted before.  To those who have a bad marriage, " I had a bad relationship."  To those who are homeless, "I was homeless, until I met Jesus".  To the opera afficianado, I operated before.  To the Rock'n' Rollers, " I Rocked and Rolled", to the football fan, " Geaux Tigers!!!"  Paul was well travelled and sophisticated.  He was able to meet a very diverse spectrum of people.   

Why did he do this?  For the sake of the Gospel.  It would be wrong for us to keep the Gospel just for ourselves.  Paul had a heart for people. Jesus did too!  They were willing to do whatever it took to connect and work towards articulating the message of Jesus.  So you say, God saves people, we just need to sit back and pray for people?  Of course he saves people, but he saves people through people.  God lives inside of us and wants to move through us.  We need to get our of our comfort zone and flow in the workings of the Holy Spirit.  We need to meet people where they are.  The greatest pastors smell like the sheep.  The greatest pastors are "sophisticated". 

The Offense

The following is from Søren Kierkegaard's "Provocations" (pg. 171).

We must awaken the collision. The possibility of offense must again be preached to life. Only the possibility of offense is able to waken those who have fallen asleep, is able to break the spell so that Christianity is itself again. Woe to him, therefore, who preaches Christianity without the possibility of offense. Woe to the person who smoothly, flirtatiously, convincingly preaches some soft, sweet something which is supposed to be Christianity! Woe to the person who betrays the mystery of faith and distorts it into public wisdom in order to take away the possibility of offense! Woe to the person who speaks of the mystery of the Atonement without detecting in it anything of the possibility of offense.

Cowboys, Giants, and General Tso's

Yesterday was a long but great day of ministry.  I went back to my dad's church, Church of the Highlands to sing and lead some worship.  He was out sick.  He had been in the hospital this past week with some gall-bladder problems which he'll be getting removed this week.   The people were great and the Lord really showed up.  My friend Grant Staples lead the first portion of the worship and he really blew me away.  I didn't realize what a voice he had.  I am really proud of him and his ministry there at C.O.T.H. 

Also, last night I gave a concert at First Baptist Church of Raymond, MS.  I met some sweet people there.  Billy Causey who is the son of Bill Causey (former pastor of Parkway Baptist in Clinton, MS) is the Minister of Music there and he was really gracious to me.  I praise God for what he is doing there in Raymond.  They have gone to two services and average over 400 on a Sunday morning.  The church really seemed to be full of life and ready to be lead. 

PJ left town today with Ramsey to go visit her dad in Baton Rouge.  I know he'll be thrilled to see Ramsey.  As for me, today I worked on getting this blogsite up and running.  Tonight, I'm gonna kick it back with my dad, some left over Chinese, and Monday Night Football.  (Cowboys and Giants).  Peace!

Many people are asking, "When is the new CD going to come out?" People, I don't know! I'm working real hard on it, though. I'm sure that I'll make CD's a little quicker down the road, but give me a break. Maybe...just maybe... God's teaching me some patience. Maybe you should listen up. All jokes aside, we are in the process of recording right now at Healing Place Church's studio in Baton Rouge, LA with Producer, Brian Edwards (the most laid back guy on the planet). We've already laid several of the drum tracks and we've pretty much wrapped up the duet with my sister, Rebecca Odom.
